Unemployment Continues to Fall

Latest estimates from the Office of National Statistics show that more people are getting jobs, with unemployment falling to its lowest level in over three years.

The key points of this month's Labout Market Statistics include:

  • A decrease in the unemployment rate from 7.8% last year to 6.8%;
  • 155,000 fewer economically inactive people (those out of work but not seeking or available to work);
  • 21.9% of economically inactive people aged 16 to 64 were economically inactive for January to March 2014, down from 22.4% last year;
  • Pay excluding bonuses is up 1.3% and pay including bonuses up 1.7%.

The increase in those working is partly put down to more people being self-employed.
